Bob and Sky Tomson of Natural Metals produce unique handmade metal artwork from the Texas Hill Country. Each piece is individually designed and handcrafted in copper and brass, colored with a chemical patina, enhanced with hand-mixed laquer finishes and sealed with a clear coat.

As a youngster Bob was introduced to an appreciation of nature by his grandfather Jim Cole, and well known naturalist Robert Sparks Walker.  He continued on in college by studying Wildlife and Fisheries.  Along the way he discovered a love and talent for working in copper and brass.

In 1976 Bob founded Natural Metals with his wife Gail in Jackson, Mississippi.  Together they became exhibiting members of the Craftsman’s Guild of Mississippi in 1978.  He later served on the Board of Directors and as President of the Guild.  In 1980 they created a full line of cookie cutters in copper, brass and stainless steel, eventually supplying over 200 shops nationwide as well as craft sections in JC Penny stores.  Custom cutters were also made for many commercial accounts and as “tools” for other crafts persons working in clay, porcelain and ceramics.  Gail passed away in 1998.

Bob continues to produce works in copper and brass and regularly adds new designs.  In 1999 he was commissioned by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks to create a large (25’x30’x2 stories high) natural scene for their new office building in Jackson.  Three large brass trees (to 23’ ft high) and many native plants were constructed in copper and brass for this installation.  He currently works out of his studio near Uvalde, Texas with his son, Sky, who joined Natural Metals in 2012. They exhibit at numerous Arts & Crafts Shows in the region.  Individual instruction and commissions are always welcome.
